From September 2010 to March 2011, I wrote a weekly column for Eye of the Vortex Online entitled “Designer Magic”. The overall topic of the column was analysis of several trading card games, especially Magic: the Gathering by Wizards of the Coast, from a game design perspective.

My topics each week were largely informed by the Magic design contests I was running at the time on EOV and its sister site, Magic Deck Vortex. Over the course of the seven months, I also gave quite a lot of attention to the finalists in WOTC’s “Great Designer Search 2,” and experimented with trying to “fix” the broken game that was the Star Wars CCG.

Most of the older articles only ever existed on their original host location and unfortunately aren’t accessible anymore, which makes me sad. The six pieces below come from the end of my Designer Magic run; regrettably, they are all that survive.
